The Augusta National Women’s Amateur will finish on Saturday April 6 — the Saturday prior to Masters Week — with coverage hitting NBC from noon to 3 p.m ET. That day will (likely) be the final round (of three) wrapping the 54-hole tournament one day prior to the annual Drive Chip and Putt National Finals.
Harry Whitt 65 was playing in the event when he collapsed under cardiac arrest on the 15th hole of Indian Wells Golf Club. Whitt’s playing partners sprang into motion calling 911. According to this feature story they also called the pro shop where they reached assistant pro Bobby McCullough.
As a press release for the tournament notes “This is not a lottery contest sweepstakes or ‘give-away’ but rather a pre-qualification for those persons wishing to purchase tickets to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship.”
“I can’t wait for the day we all can live without feeling like we’re different and excluded. A time where we don’t have to come out we can love the way we want to love and not be ashamed. We are all human and equal after all. So I dare you…spread love. Let’s do our part to make this world a better place.”
The Rules of Golf have long been ridiculed for their strictness and ambiguity but this stands as a positive step for clarity on how the game is governed. Also included in the Player’s Edition are colored diagrams for further context and clarification.
Rounds one and two will take place at Champions Retreat Golf Club (on the Island and Bluff nines) on that week’s Wednesday and Thursday. Highlights for both of those rounds will be provided by Golf Channel which is owned by NBC. Then the top 30 players and ties will have a practice round day at Augusta National on Friday April 5.
“Can you tell me which sport really developed because of an event? None. It’s a champion who pushes the young people and develops the sport” Riboud said. “That’s what Yannick Noah Roland Garros and Jean-Claude Killy did. We need a champion. Perhaps it’s crazy but that’s the thing we have to dream about it.”
Tickets will be available for all three rounds. If you successfully acquire passes to the first two rounds your entry will be free. Passes for the final round at Augusta National will run you $75.
What’s really on the minds of the best golfers in the world? In the polite confines of the PGA Tour it’s often hard to know. Until now. With the goal of letting players let it fly we granted them anonymity and picked their brains on a wide range of hot-button topics (cheating on Tour! Tiger v. Phil! Brandel Chamblee!).
With the 2019 Masters beginning the following week this is a great opportunity to see Augusta National at its best under tournament conditions.
The highly anticipated addition to the run-up to Masters week — a women’s amateur event beginning in 2019 — will make things look very different in early April. Beyond the most obvious differences the production will also look different as NBC Sports has won the broadcasting rights to the event.
Some have even taken their lives because of it. As long as those things are still happening I will continue to do my best to bring more awareness to this issue and to fight for equality.
